Steve Parish Publishing Wins Four Whitley Awards in 2010

Steve Parish Publishing is proud to announce that the company and its authors have won four Whitley Awards in 2010 at a ceremony at the Australian Museum on Friday 24 September 2010. The Whitley Awards, first presented in 1979, are hosted by the Royal Zoological Society of NSW and honour outstanding publications dealing with the promotion and conservation of Australasian fauna, making them the most coveted writing awards for natural historians in Australia. They are a tribute to Gilbert Whitley (1903-1975), who was the Curator of Fishes at the Australian Museum from 1922 to 1964.

Steve was especially honoured with a Special Commendation for his contribution to the promotion of Australasian fauna and its conservation. In 2003, the Royal Zoological Society of NSW instigated this prestigious award and Steve was delighted to be awarded this honour in a year that coincides with his 50th anniversary of embarking upon nature photography. While Steve could not be present at the ceremony, Steve Parish Publishing's Inhouse Author Karin Cox accepted the Certificate on Steve's behalf from esteemed herpetologist Hal Cogger, who presented the award.

Karin was also honoured for her highly praised text in two categories -- the Whitley Award for Best Popular Zoology title for Australian Wildlife and for Zoological Conservation with Amazing Facts about Australian Wildlife Conservation, both of which received glowing reviews from Shelley Burgess and Noel Tait respectively.

Added to Steve Parish Publishing's tally was also an award for Best Pocket Guide for Les Hall's Wild Australia Guide: Bats, which received high acclaim from presenter Dan Lunney. The event was a big success where many of the luminaries of Australian natural history publishing, writing and researching came together to celebrate.

Steve Awarded an Order of Australia Medal

In 2008 Steve Parish was recognised with an Order of Australia Medal for contribution to the Australian publishing industry through nature photography.

“I am motivated by a passion for nature. Acknowledging the loss of many of our unique wild places and creatures, it has become my objective, as a photographer and publisher, to inspire others to champion their protection. We inherited a world in balance and we should all play a part in the redress of that balance. We consider it our contribution and moral obligation to produce and sell our nature publications.” Steve Parish
